Ann Townsend Young was born in Jasper, Alabama to James and Mary Townsend. She completed her undergraduate studies and was awarded a BS in Botany from Samford University in Birmingham, AL and received her Master's Degree in Education from the University of Georgia at Athens. Professionally known as A.T. Young, she worked as a Technical Information Specialist at the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, MD until her retirement in 2003.
She was a resident of Greenbelt from 1982 until 2004, when she and her husband of 33 years, Rodney W. Young, moved to Laurel, MD. As a resident of Greenbelt, Mrs. Young was a member of the Finance Committee for G.H.I. She volunteered as a docent at the Smithsonian Institution Museum of Natural History for several years.
Mrs. Young passed away on Monday, February 18, 2008, at Laurel Regional Hospital.
She will be buried in her family cemetery on the grounds of the Saragossa Baptist Church in Saragossa, AL. She is survived by her husband, Rodney W. Young, her brother, George Townsend of Baton Rouge, LA, Donald Townsend of Dora, AL and her sister Rosa Williams of Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Kenneth and Ralph Townsend. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the National Wildflower Research Institute of Austin, TX.
