December 29, 1927 — August 19, 2015

Arlie Don Long Jr., of Montross, Virginia formerly of Lanham, Maryland passed away on August 19, 2015 at McGuire VA. Hospice Richmond, Virginia. Arlie was preceded in death by his parents Arlie and Lena Long, his sister Helen Shapard, his grandson, Hubert Long and his great grandson, Conner Sexton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Freda Smith Long, his sister Ila Cupp, Betty Edwards, his children Arlie Long III (Teresa), Mary McCool, Clara Davis, Hubert Long (Lorna), Joyce Anderson and Robert Long. Arlie loved his grandchildren, Crystal and Jonathan Long, Stacy Sexton, Michelle and Steven Davis, Andrea and Tyler Long, Robert and Brian Anderson, Sherrie Wolford, Diane Treadaway, and Tracy Long, and his great grandchildren Tyler, Hunter, Parker, Lilly, Vivian, Caleb, Daniel, Jason, and Aracely. He is also survived by many loving brother in law's, sister in law's, niece's, nephew's, extended family and friends.

Arlie's professional career was with the Naval Ordinance Laboratory, Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA), the Naval Research Laboratory, and Honeywell. His favorite career position was as a project engineer. He retired with 35 years of federal government service and 10 years service with Honeywell. He served in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division from 1946 to 1951, as a rifleman, a paratrooper and paraglider. He received many awards, including World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Japan and Advanced Airborne Medal. He served with Company F. 187th Glider Infantry Regiment, Sapporo, Japan. He was a member of an airborne rifle squad. Trained in the nomenclature, maintenance and tactical uses of small arm infantry weapons.

Providing for his family was important to him, he believed in family fun time; fishing, hunting, camping, flying airplanes, building homes, soap box derby cars and boats, taking vacations and following his children and grandchildren to their sporting events. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a fix-it man, who could repair and build anything given to him. He built the home of his and Freda's dreams for his family to come and visit.

Arlie's life will be celebrated at Gasch's Funeral Home in Hyattsville, MD. A visitation will be held on August 24, 2015 from 4 to 7 pm. A service will be held on August 25 at 10:30 am at Gasch's with burial to follow at Cheltenham Maryland Veterans Cemetery at 1pm.

Arlie's family would like to thank McGuire VAMC, Dr. Bruzzese and McGuire Hospice for the compassionate and excellent health care he received.
Pall bears will be Arlie's grandson's, nephew's and family members.
