It is with great sadness that we inform our friends and family of the passing of our beloved father, Carl J. Carni. Dad's heavenly journey began on November 30 at 6:55 pm, surrounded by loved ones in his final days and moments. A graveside service will be held at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD, on Friday, December 6th, at 11:00 am.
Dad worked as a carpenter for 42 years, later becoming a Supervisor and managing a team of 40 men from various trade backgrounds. The majority of his career was spent at the NSA, where he worked from 1961 until his retirement in 2000. A devoted Christian, Dad was a member of St. Bernard's Church in Riverdale for over 50 years, where his beautiful voice could be heard on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings as a member of the church choir.
In addition to singing, Dad was passionate about baseball and dedicated much of his time to coaching. He coached St. Bernard's youth baseball teams for over 10 years and was named CYO Coach of the Year in 1987. That same year, his team won the league championship. Dad also served as the Youth Baseball and Softball Director for 12 years, spending countless Spring and Summer days at the local fields supporting all the teams, making lifelong friends, and helping mold young men and women with strong Christian values and sportsmanship. From 1983 to 1987, Dad coached the local Riverdale Babe Ruth team.
While there may not be buildings, bridges, or statues bearing his name, his legacy lives on through the friendships he made and the lives he touched. His "bridges" are the connections he built, and his "buildings" are the lessons he imparted.
Dad is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joanne Carni; his daughter, Beth Perry; his son, Chris Carni; his son-in-law, Rich Perry; his grandchildren, Christian and Michael Carni, Christopher and Alyssa Perry; his great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Emberlee Perry; and Christopher Perry’s fiancée, Whitney Burrows.
Dad, thank you for everything you did for us — for being our teacher, mentor, coach, advisor, and the rock of our family. But most of all, thank you for being our dad.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Carl's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
