Earl E. Jones Jr., lovingly known as "Mike," was born on January 3, 1941, in Washington, D.C., and departed this world on December 7, 2024, at the age of 83. Earl’s adventurous spirit, quick wit, deep love of music, and genuine appreciation for life left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him.
A proud native of Washington, D.C., Earl graduated from Spingarn High School, where he excelled as a member of the school band and Archery Club, earning numerous trophies for his talent with a bow. He continued his education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, studying Physical Education and Recreation. Earl began his career at Kelly Miller Elementary School in Washington, D.C., and after 32 years of dedicated government service, he retired, leaving behind a legacy of excellence.
Earl’s zest for life was reflected in his passions and hobbies. A natural people person, he thrived on engaging with others and often joked that he needed to be around people just to "run his mouth." Bowling, cooking, and barbering provided him with the perfect outlets for his love of connection and storytelling. When Earl had an audience, it was guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience filled with laughter and captivating tales.
Music was a cornerstone of Earl’s life. His love for singing and listening to music brought constant joy to his home. Whether it was an impromptu performance at a family gathering or his legendary birthday serenades, Earl’s musical talents were treasured by all who knew him. As a professional singer with the group The Satisfactions, Earl shared his gift with audiences far and wide, performing at Washington, D.C.’s iconic Club Jackie Lee’s and touring extensively across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Undoubtedly, this is when he developed his dapper wardrobe and sharp sense of style, always looking polished and confident.
Fishing, however, was Earl’s greatest passion—perhaps even an “addiction,” as he liked to joke. His extensive knowledge of fish species, habitats, and behaviors was unmatched. At home, his freshwater aquariums brought him peace and joy. Earl loved passing down his love of fishing to his children and grandchildren, though he occasionally snuck off for solo fishing adventures to savor the tranquility.
Earl’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and countless stories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his sisters, Barbara and Patricia; his children, Carla, Michalet, Nicole, Thomas, and Karen; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Earl Sr., and his brother, Wayne.
A celebration of Earl’s extraordinary life will be held on December 30, 2024, at Gasch’s Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Ave, Hyattsville, MD. Interment will follow at George Washington/Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 9500 Riggs Road, Adelphi, MD 20783.
