Elaine Montgomery

November 13, 1925 — October 28, 2008

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully early Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Doctors Community Hosptial, Lanham, Md. She was born on November 13, 1925, in Moberly, Missouri. She was the daughter of the late Leroy W. Cavanaugh, and Ada M. (nee Brown) Cavanaugh. She was for 61 years the wife of James W. "Red" Montgomery of Mitchellville, Md. She came to Washington, D.C. at 17 to be a government secretary for O.P.A.. She settled in Maryland and married her husband in 1947. She worked for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for many years, retiring in January 1987. She was an active GRAA member and helped with coordinating NASA's annaul Christmas party for NASA employees, and their families as well as the community. She continued writing on the GRAA newsletter for NASA after retiring and also helped her husband with their electrical business. She and her husband were active members of Greenbelt American Legion Post 136, BPOElks 1778, and the Moose Club. She and her husband enjoyed many Friday dinners with friends at the Elks. She enjoyed her Thursday lunch with her lady friends at the American Legion. She was an avid shopper, crossword player, Redskin and Orioles fan, and loved to travel with her husband, family and friends. She and her husband traveled as far as Glascow, Scotland, Alaska, and Hawaii. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and always had a gift for you when she came to visit. As well as her husband, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Russ Davis of Hiltonhead, SC, son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Joanie Montgomery of Manchester, Md, daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and John Smart of Gaithersburg, Md, grandson and girlfriend, Jerry Montgomery and Michele Sheaffer of Manchester, Md, granddaughter and husband, Jaclyn and Jeff Cole, of Glen Rock, Pa, grandsons and granddaughter, Sam, Matt, and Patricia Smart of Gaithersburg, great-grandchildren, Misty, Shane, and A.J. sister, Mary Milnes of Moberly, Missouri, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Philip and Frances Montgomery of Severn, Md and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She is predeceased by brother, Porter. Viewing 11-1, and services after 1 p.m. will be held at Gasch's Funeral Home on Saturday, November 1. Family requests all donations in her name be made to Elks National foundation, Prince George's County Lodge 1778, 6700 Kenilworth Avenue, Riverdale, MD 20737.
