On Friday, May 7, 2021, Francis M. Collins, III, known to his family and friends as Michael, or Mike, died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with Parkinson’s. He was 74 years old and a lifelong resident of Cheverly, MD. He was a very active member of St. Ambrose Parish in Cheverly and member of the Men’s Club there for many years. His friends speak fondly of Michael, telling us how he would eagerly help anyone who needed his assistance. In younger years he enjoyed scuba diving and downhill skiing. He also enjoyed wood working and, along with his father, had completed a number of projects for the church. In later years he could be seen walking the many hills of Cheverly.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Francis M. Collins, Jr and Mary Spallen Collins. He is survived by 3 sisters: Rosalie Collins (Delaware), Maureen Binder (Wayne) (So Carolina) and Cindy Gambogi (Joseph) (Virginia), his nieces Shelley Binder and Bridget Gambogi and nephew Matthew Gambogi.
Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ambrose, Cheverly, MD, Monday May 17, 2021 at 10:30am with viewing in the lower level of the Church 1 hour prior to Mass. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.
The members of Mike’s family wish to thank his friends who gave him help and support over the years as well as the professional caregivers who assisted and cared for him over the last 4 years. May God bless you all.
