Roland fell asleep on Monday, January 7, 2013 at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.;
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Maria Koniuchowskyj Stransky; his children Julie Anne Gormley and Francis Roland Stransky III; son-in law Andy Gormley and daughter-in-law Julia Stransky; 4 grandchildren: William Matthew Gormley, Olivia Genevieve Gormley, Joseph Alexander Stransky and Zachary James Stransky; sister Virginia Shifflett and family; brother-in law Wasyl Koniuchowskyj; cousin George John Stransky and family, and many friends. He was predeceased by both parents Officer Francis R Stransky, Sr. and Eva Leisner.
He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and served four years in the Navy from 1969-1973 on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) Aircraft Carrier. Starting in 1980, he began work as a civilian Motor Vehicle Operator for the Department of the Navy at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. He retired after 25 years in 2004. A true outdoorsman, his passion was fishing and he felt "at home" out on the ocean or on the Chesapeake Bay. A self-taught musician, he formed a small band with several talented musicians that entertained thousands of people with German and polka music for over twenty years.
Funeral Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, 4230 Harewood Rd, N.E., Washington, D.C.
A reception will follow in the Church Hall to celebrate Roland's life.
Interment will be private.
