James F. Harkleroad, aged 97, of College Park, Maryland, peacefully departed this life on Monday, February 10, 2025. Born on October 13, 1927, in Washington, DC, he was the cherished son of the late Angelina and Joseph Harkleroad. James honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his distinguished military service, he devoted his career as a mason. Laying brick was his expertise, and his work was impeccable.
James found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved people, cherished his church, and was deeply devoted to his fellow parishioners. A lifelong Catholic and a man of deep faith, he lived his life with kindness and generosity. His legacy is one of love and dedication.
He met his beloved wife, Joan, in a way that would become a treasured family story—because he had a car. Their love blossomed with a kiss at the beach, and from that moment on, their journey was set. They married on May 12, 1951, and together built a beautiful life. Their family began in July 1952 and continued to grow through 1975, ultimately blessing them with nine children: Donna Lackey, Jerri Fabina, Michael Harkleroad, Lawrence Harkleroad, Jeffrey Harkleroad, Christy McGarvey, Dina Harris, Bobbie Saunders, and Paula Claypoole. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan Harkleroad and their daughter, Dina Harris. His legacy extends to twenty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
James was affectionately referred to as Pop to everyone. He treasured every moment spent with his family, his Holy Redeemer family, and his many friends, creating lasting memories and spreading love to all who knew him. His warmth, humor, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
