On January 6, 2010 after a long battle with breast cancer. She is survived by a brother, Jean-Pierre Cap, a nephew, Andrew P. Cap, M,D. Ph.D., Major US Army, and a niece, Ingrid Wood. Jeannine was born July 16, 1939 in Longueil Ste-Marie, France, of Ukrainian and Polish parents who had immigrated to France. During World War II her family was deported by the German occupants to the Ardennes region where they were to replace French workers who had fled south. After the war, an aunt who had immigrated to the US on the eve of World War I, sponsored Jeannine's family, and together they arrived in Philadelphia in 1952. Encouraged and supported by their parents who had great faith in education, both she and her brother Jean-Pierre pursued their university studies through the doctorate. As an NDEA scholar, Jeannine earned her Ph.D. in French and Romance Languages at Catholic University. She taught French at the University of Maryland, at Rutgers University-Camden, and at the Defense Language Institute before joining the Library of Congress where she worked as an Acquisitions Librarian for 25 years. During her entire career she remained a diligent student and scholar of French culture and the French language, which she frequently taught at the Library of Congress. She was highly regarded and well liked by her colleagues and much appreciated by her students for her professionalism and kindness. Although she traveled to see many of the world's wonders and places of artistic interest, she loved Washington, where she lived most of her life, above all others. Family will receive friends on Monday, January 11th from 7-9pm at GASCH'S FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 12th at 9:30am at the Holy Cross Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, MD 20896. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
