Joan Mutty Symington, 83, lost her battle with Alzheimer's on August 11, 2009 at Elizabeth Manor Assisted Living, in Lanham. Born February 27, 1926 in Brewer, Maine, where she grew up and graduated from Bangor High School. The family relocated to Connecticut during WWII. There, Joan began her 34 year career with AT&T Bell System Telephone Company, first as a switchboard operator and then as a customer service representative. Her career took her to positions in Connecticut and New Hampshire, before finally retiring in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Joan relocated to the Washington, DC area in 1997 to be near her sister. There she enjoyed all that the area had to offer-theater, concerts, museums, and dining. She loved to travel and took great joy in planning the trips that included destinations such as Ireland, Germany, Norway, Italy, the Czech Republic, England and Belgium. She was still able to fit in a part-time position at Collington Episcopal Life Care Community, helping with interior design work during their renovation and expansion. Joan is survived by her son, Scott Jay Symington, her brother, John Lynch Mutty, sister, Judy Mutty, nieces Janet Loh and Jackie Toon and nephews Mitchell and Jim Mutty. She was preceded in death by her two sons, George Edward Mayo and Jay Harold Symington. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 10 am at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 8001 Annapolis Rd., New Carrollton, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855 (www.alz.org) or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401, or St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 8001 Annapolis Rd., New Carrollton, MD 20784.
