Roderick E. Kennedy, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel United States Army (Retired), died Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the age of 85. He was born in 1931 in Chicago, Illinois and lived in Landover Hills, Maryland since 1965. LTC Kennedy served 20 years as an active duty Army officer, serving in armored cavalry and military intelligence units. He was deployed overseas in Germany and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. His military decorations include the Bronze Star and the General Pershing Award. Following his retirement from the Army, LTC Kennedy followed his passion for history by teaching in the Prince George's County public schools for 20 years, teaching middle and high school social studies. He was an active parishioner at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Landover Hills and a member of the Landover Hills town council. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sunhild Kennedy; his three sons, Patrick Kennedy (Nancy) of Greenville, South Carolina, Thomas Kennedy (Sandy) of Reston, Virginia, and Michael Kennedy (Amy) of Salt Lake City, Utah; his two grandchildren, William Kennedy and Mary Camilla Kennedy of Greenville, South Carolina; and his sister, Joan Oller of Albuquerque, New Mexico. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 7207 Annapolis Road, Landover Hills on Wednesday, March 29 at 11 AM. Inurnment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
