Richard Houchens

On Monday, October 6, 2008, Richard Stapleton Houchens, 88, of College Park, Maryland, and Louisa, Virginia, departed this life.
Born on October 11, 1919 on the family farm in Louisa, Virginia, Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha; parents, Thomas E., Sr. and Vashti A. Houchens; brother Taylor Houchens; and sisters Ruth Kerns and Grace Alford.
While his profession was that of a self-employed paint contractor and Maryland State Forest Fire Warden, he was also a longtime member of the College Park Volunteer Fire Department. He was elected Chief in 1947 and held that office for some nine years. During his tenure as Chief, it was through his efforts that a squad truck, two pumper trucks and a ladder truck were acquired and put into service. His volunteer service didn't end there, as he spent many years as a volunteer coach for the College Park Boys Club.
He leaves to deeply mourn his loss, children Lawanna Houchens, Linda Edwards and Rick (Michelle) Houchens; brothers Thomas E., Jr. and Carroll Houchens; sisters Eunice Jenkins and Pearl Hobson; six grandchildren; five great-grandsons and numerous other relatives and friends.
He leaves a 6th generation his legacy to continue a love and passion for his heritage and beloved family property in Louisa, Virginia.
Family and friends are invited to share in Richard's Life Celebration at Gasch's Funeral Home, P.A., 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where a service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Louisa, VA on Monday, October 13th at Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8724 Jericho City Drive, Landover, MD 20785.
