Robert Glanden passed away on Saturday, April 5th, 2025 at his home in Hyattsville.
Son of the late Clifton H. and Rachel (Byrd) Glanden. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris F. Glanden, children; Michael (Sue) Van-Glanden, Alex (Karen) and Nicholas (Natalie) Glanden; grandchildren, Casey and Sarah Van-Glanden, Lillian, Lydia and Nicholas Glanden, Jr. and his brothers, Jimmy and William and sister, Diane Glanden. His brother, Ira, preceded him death.
Robert graduated from Dover High School in June 1961 and entered the US Navy in February 1962 where he attended Aviation Electrical School in 1962. He was honorably discharged in May of 1966. During his time in the service, he was trained on the electrical systems of the E1B aircraft and navigation systems. He served two nine-month long cruises in the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Forrestal.
After serving in the Navy, he was hired by the Olivetti Corp of America (Westchester. NY) where he worked for 17 years. Following the sale of Olivetti to TRW (Jessup, MD) where he worked an additional 10 years. During his employment there he participated in the installation of 2,500 PCs and printers in the Washington metro area, mainly in the US Department of Justice. He was the company representative from 1989 until 1994 in Washington, DC and worked for a short time in Annapolis. He was reassigned to the EEOC headquarters in Washington, DC and the U.S. House of Representatives. Starting in October 1997 he did PC installations and maintenance and repair at Prince George’s Community College.
Robert liked serving his community. He volunteered with the Boy Scout Christmas tree lot sales and the overnight camp outs, at Landover Hills Aquatics Center Pool, at the St. Bernard football camps, at St. Mary’s sport concession stands, and other church organizations like the Knights of Columbus and their famous Tootsie Roll campaign and as a Grand Knight at St. Mary’s. He also volunteered weekly with Meals on Wheels.
Family and friends are invited to Robert’s viewing at Gasch’s Funeral Home in Hyattsville on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025 from 4 to 8pm. An additional viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 16th at 10-11:45am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 7301 Annapolis Road, Landover Hills. A funeral mass will follow at 12pm.
