On February 1, 2010, Sam passed away at the age of 80. He was born on April 12, 1929 in Pauline, South Carolina to John and Sally Rakestraw. He moved to Maryland and took a position as an Elevator Operator with the Hotel Washington in Washington, DC. During his career with the hotel, he had the opportunity to meet many public and famous figures, including Elvis Presley, Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash. When Sam moved from Cheverly to Landover Hills, Maryland he joined the congregation of Landover Hills Baptist Church and remained a devoted member until his passing. Sam was the cousin of Jessie Blanchard and her husband Frank and the dear friend of Al and Rose Khan and their children, Charin and Joshua. He will also be missed by his church family. Relatives and friends are invited to Sam's Life Celebration at Gasch's Funeral Home, P.A., 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m., Pastor David Griesemer officiating. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
