On Tuesday, August 25, 2009, Sarah Allman Forbes, 85, died at her home in College Park, MD, surrounded by family, of complications from a stroke. Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Georgia Allman. She was the cherished wife of the late Deacon Rodney Forbes, her husband of 50 years. She was also preceded in death by her sister Pauline Suraci and her brother Leon Allman.
She is survived by five daughters: Rosemary, wife of David Rest; Teresa, wife of Joe Dyer; Cecilia; Carol; and Jennifer, wife of Scott Taylor; and ten grandchildren, with one great-grandson to be born in November. She is also survived by her sister Ruby Womack.
Sarah was a graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College and taught for many years after obtaining her degree. She was a beloved teacher at Davis Hall-Berwyn Preschool from 1970 to 1986. In her later years, her passion was raising funds to find a cure for Alzheimer's, the disease that afflicted her husband Rodney. She personally raised close to $10,000 in support of the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk, and was tireless in her commitment to the cause.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2009 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, with a prayer service beginning at 8 PM, at Gasch's Funeral Home, P.A., 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781. A Rite of Christian Burial Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 31, 2009 at 11 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 3628 Rhode Island Avenue, Mt. Rainier, MD, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Sarah's name for the 2009 Memory Walk to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater MD, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
