Stephen Reid “Steve” Gibson, 80, of New Market, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
A life-long Maryland resident, Steve was raised and lived much of his adult life in Lanham until his mother, Mildred Clatterbaugh, passed away. He then moved to the quiet countryside of New Market where he resided for 25 years.
Steve was the loving father of Karen Gibson and Kevin Gibson, and stepfather of Kenny Hall. He is survived by his ex-wife, Lana Corrado; nephew Dale Stevens; niece Deanna Torres; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reid Gibson and Mildred (Bayne) Gibson-Clatterbaugh; sister Dora Stevens; and brother Charles “Chuck” Gibson.
Steve grew up quickly, due to his father’s passing as he entered his teenage years. He left school and became a skilled painter, a trade that he could always fall back on to make a living.
Steve was employed by the Stone and Marble Masons Union, contracted by the Architect of the Capitol, for most of his working years where he helped preserve many historic structures in Washington, DC including the U.S. Capitol Building and the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Steve later worked as a painter for his brother-in-law and then his nephew. His employment continued as a warehouse technician with homebuilder NVR before he fully retired in 2007.
Steve enjoyed tinkering in his garage as a young man; he built his Classic Ford Coupe into a street rod and worked on many other projects through the years. He liked going to auctions, thrift stores, and yard sales searching for classic car parts, toys, models, and whatnot to add to his many collections. He was always looking for a good deal.
In recent years he enjoyed working in his yard, watching professional baseball and tennis, as well as the game show “The Price is Right” and spending time with family.
