Thelma Baker

December 4, 1922 — April 30, 2010

On April 30, 2010, Thelma passed away at her home in Hyattsville, MD. She was born in Washington, DC and lived in Hyattsville for 87 years. She was the beloved mother of Michael Baker, of Baltimore, MD, Thomas Baker, III and his wife, Marguerite, of Hyattsville, MD, and Mary Ellen Baker and her husband, Damon Foreman, of Columbia, MD. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Thomas James Baker, Jr. She graduated from Hyattsville High School in 1939. Her volunteer activities included work as a Reading Tutor at Hyattsville Elementary School, the Oasis Senior Program of Prince George's County and for the Hyattsville Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon. She worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency and the Office of the Quarter Master General of the Army. As the first Executive Secretary for the Defense Supply Agency, she received awards for Civil Service Empoyee of the Year and the Employee of the Decade. Relatives and friends are invited to join in Thelma's Life Celebration on Tuesday, May 4th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at Gasch's Funeral Home, P.A., 4739 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, MD. A funeral service will be held at Riverdale Presbyterian Church, 6513 Queens Chapel Rd., University Park, MD on Wednesday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Hyattsville Elementary School Needy Children's Fund, 5311 43rd Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20781.
