William Lee Mothersole, a longtime resident of Berwyn Heights, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the age of 99. Bill was born on October 17, 1924, in Cumberland, Maryland. Graduating from Allegany High School in 1942, he then served as a staff sergeant with the Nineth Army Air Force in Europe during World War II. His unit, the 938th squadron (P-38 photo recon), played a minor role in the Battle of the Bulge.
Following military service Bill attended the University of Maryland on the GI Bill, receiving a degree in accounting in 1951. After college he joined the Central Intelligence Agency as a budget analyst, retiring in 1981 after station tours in Japan, the Philippines, and South Vietnam. At the CIA, Bill also met his future wife Mary Constance (Connie) Fritz. They married in 1954 and were together until her death in 2001.
Following his retirement from the CIA, Bill joined a private firm consulting with the State Department on embassy security which involved travel to South America and West Africa.
A lifelong sports fan, Bill followed Washington’s football and baseball teams closely. He also greatly enjoyed walks in Greenbelt Park and around Lake Artemisia with Connie and their beagles.
Bill is survived by his four children, John Mothersole (Brenda) of Rockville, MD, MaryAnne Mothersole of Bethesda, MD, Margaret Mothersole of Washington, DC, and Alexa Mothersole Cox (James) of College Park, MD, and three granddaughters.
Internment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
