William Lee Tavel

William Lee Tavel (BT) of 3902 Volta Ave, Brentwood passed away on September 30th, 2023, at the age of 70. BT was born on August 14th, 1953, to William and Mary Tavel of Brentwood, Maryland and was preceded in death by his two brothers, Joseph E. Tavel (JET) and Wayne L. Tavel (Mini). BT was a resident of the town of Brentwood for over 40 years and a member of the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department for over 56 years. On September 17th, BT was honored for his contributions to the fire department by being selected to the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire Department Hall of Fame. BT served honorably in the United States Navy from January 1973 till December 1978. BT was a plank owner and spent his entire Navy career aboard the USS California, home ported out of Naval Station Norfolk, VA. During this time, he reached the rank of IC2/E-5. He will always be remembered for this honorable service to our nation with a brick laid in Brentwood Veterans Park. BT retired from his career in Train Control operations with WMATA in 2019. BT was a proud father of 5 children, Joseph A. Tavel of Portland, OR, Jason W. Tavel (Jennifer L.) of Woodbine, GA, Jennifer M. Tavel of Portland, OR, Janna E. Channel of Portland, OR and James L. Tavel of Brookings, OR. He was also very proud and loved his six grandchildren, Madison Hanke and Jessica Tavel (Jason), Quinton Channel and Emeri Channel (Janna), and Hunter Tavel and Athena Tavel (James).

Services for BT will begin on Sunday October 15th at 10am by the newly commissioned BVFD apparatus picking him up from Gasch's Funeral Home and carrying him for his final tour through Brentwood. This ride will end at the Fire Department where a remembrance will start at 11:00 A.M. This will be followed immediately at 12:00 P.M. by Firefighter and Military Honors. 

In this time, BT would love to continue to support the fire department so he asked that in lieu of flowers please make donations in his name to the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department at 3716 Rhode Island Ave, Brentwood, MD 21122.
