Joseph Anthony Armstrong passed away January 23, 2021 at the age of 67 at his home in College Park, MD. Originally from Augusta, GA, he graduated from Aquinas High School, Class of 1971, and received an Associate Degree from Augusta State University in 1980. During that time, he traveled and worked in many interesting places within the U.S. After working on the construction of Plant Vogtle, Joseph moved to Washington, DC in 1984 as a professional union iron worker.  He joined the HVAC field in 1998 after completing a four-year apprenticeship, pursued HVAC sales, became store manager, and taught HVAC at the University of the District of Columbia. A devout member of St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainier, MD, he became an ESL instructor, homeless services program organizer, events volunteer, lector, Eucharistic minister, and a member of the choir and of the Holy Name Society. He and his wife of 10 years, Nieva Tiongson Armstrong, made many good memories together. Joseph worked hard, made many friends, and enjoyed life.The son of Philip Joseph and Mary Dorothy Brown Armstrong, Joseph is survived by three sisters, Mary Armstrong, Debbie Armstrong, and Elizabeth Armstrong Coyne, and one brother, Philip Armstrong. His other brother, Bernard Armstrong, predeceased him in 2017.

Adrianus Leonardus Verdel, better known as Opa, Papa, or Oom Arie to his family and Arie or Mr.

Independence, to his neighbors, passed on Dec. 13, 2020 and is now in the hands of God.

Born in Roelofarendsveen, Holland, in 1923, to parents Hermanus and Johanna Verdel, Arie lived there

until after getting married when he moved to the Hague where he and his wife had their first two

children. In 1957, he immigrated to the United States to find better housing and opportunities for his

family. He lived for three weeks with his sister in Hyattsville and then moved to an apartment in Takoma

Park where his youngest daughter was born. In 1963, he moved to Landover Hills, where he lived until

well beyond his 95th birthday in 2018.  His last home was in Columbia, MD where he no longer had to fix

his own meals. Other than a few years with other jobs, he worked as a gardener starting at the age of

13.  His main career was as the head gardener at the Dutch Embassy in Washington, D.C.   He kept an

impeccable garden until he sold his house in Landover Hills. He then did gardening at Harmony Hall until
